Epic cycle relay in aid of diabetes
FOURTY-EIGHT hours and 1 200km after leaving Rivonia on 7 November, the Novo Nordisk Changing Diabetes Cycle Relay arrived in the Western Cape.
The 16 cyclists departed from Rivonia in the bid to raise funds for children in George with Type One diabetes and to raise awareness about the illness.
Team Novo Nordisk members who are all diagnosed with Type One diabetes, represented Novo Nordisk, the sponsors of the relay and a healthcare company committed to defeating the diabetes pandemic. The other teams were Cycle4Diabetes, Bonitas Pro Cycling and a celebrity team that was headed by former Springbok player, Joel Stransky.
Stransky said, “Cycling isn’t just a thrilling sport; it is also an amazing way to help others. We take this opportunity to give back to others through something we are passionate about.”
Novo Nordisk marketing manager, David Broomfield said, “Last year I flew to George but this year I decided to drive as part of the support team and I must say, I have a new respect for these guys.”
He handed over a cheque of R130 000 to the man behind the event and programme for the children in George, Doctor Jacques van Staden, who also led the Cycle4Diabetes team.
“Taking care of these children on a day to day basis, I know how important this medication and education is. With appropriate treatment and lifestyle management, people living with this chronic condition can have a long, active, engaged and healthy life,” he said.
