Youth leadership starts right now

Pupils and teachers of Umqhele Comprehensive School, Ponelopele Oracle Secondary School and Afrika Tikkun Uthando Centre took part in the final screening of the National Youth and Development Agency’s Step Up Let’s Lead project at Sandton City. The project was targeted at underprivileged high school pupils.

The screening featured a 90 minute film starring entrepreneur and comedian Mpho ‘Popps’ Modikoane. The aim of the film was to introduce pupils to the fundamentals of leadership and it was screened nationwide at 15 different cinema complexes.

The agency’s David McCarthy said Old Mutual played a big part in ensuring that the initiative was a success. “The key sponsor that was present from Old Mutual was Zandile Maramnco,” he said. “Everyone including the pupils and the teachers enjoyed themselves. All those that attended were given a comprehensive booklet that introduced the fundamental nuances of leadership.”

McCarthy said the project included the invitation of pupils who have demonstrated and implemented strong leadership activities in their schools as well as their communities to an awards ceremony. The ceremony is set to take place in November at the Standard Bank Global Leadership Centre in Morningside.
