Anderson bows out

The impressive run of Sandton resident and St Stithians alumni Kevin Anderson at the Australian Open came to an end on Sunday.

Anderson, who was competing in the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, was halted by fifth seed Tomas Berdych.

He had caused an upset when he defeated 22nd seed Fernando Verdasco in Melbourne on 18 January. It was Anderson’s first win in three encounters against the Spaniard on the ATP tour.

Anderson had previously reached the third round of the US Open in 2010 and 2011, and last year’s French Open, and is bidding to emulate fellow South African Wayne Ferreira, who reached the semifinals in Melbourne in 2003.
