The Ultra Liquors 100 Women 100 Wines competition was launched at a lunch at The Maslow Hotel.

Hosted by Clare Mack and Eamon McLoughlin of Spill Communications, the lunch was an introduction to pairing wine with food.

The competition highlights the importance of women to the wine industry as 80 percent of wine is purchased by women in Johannesburg.

On arrival, guests were seated and given a menu and an assortment of wine glasses to begin their tasting experience. A sparkling wine was paired with a crab salad and grapefruit starter. A buffalo mozzarella with pea and cucumber dish followed to be washed down with a Sauvignon Blanc.

Executive Sous Chef Adrian Vaughn explained to guests how he worked with palette pairings and winemaker Anneke du Plessis discussed the various wines.

The mains were split into a roast chicken supreme with toasted corn paired up with a Chenin Blanc, a duck parfait paired with a red blend and a roast loin of venison with a Shiraz.

Lunch ended early evening with a cherry parfait paired up with a dessert wine.

Mack is looking for woman judges who are passionate about wine culture and want to participate in the competition. One does not need to be a wine connoisseur to enter.

The event will be hosted on 1 November at The Maslow Hotel where judges will sip and swirl 300 South African wines.
