Final suspect arrested for murder of elderly couple

A man has been arrested in connection with the 2012 murder of two elderly Morningside residents.

On 7 September 2012, the Sandton police were called to a murder scene in North Road, Morningside. A son had found his parents dead in the home after they had failed to arrive for a lunch appointment.

The couple, both in their 70s, had been tied up and gagged with plastic bags.

According to Captain Kym Cloete, spokesperson for the Sandton police, it appeared as though the house had been ransacked, and various household items including cellphones, speakers, a DSTV decoder, and other household electronic items were missing. A Mazda Rustler bakkie was also stolen.

The case was given to a detective, Warrant Officer Alfred Odendal, for further investigation.

“Through painstaking investigation, following up of leads and evidence, an initial arrest of a 27-year-old male suspect was made on 14 March 2013,” said Cloete.

The detective also recovered some of the property which had been taken from the residence.

Warrant Officer Odendal continued his investigation, and followed up on numerous leads, attempting to trace the last outstanding suspect.

He was successful last week, when the suspect was arrested in KwaZulu-Natal.

The suspect appeared in the Johannesburg High Court on 30 September on two charges of murder and aggrevated robbery.
