Top cop urgently needed in Gauteng

GAUTENG needs a police commissioner who would protect the people of the province, DA community safety spokesperson Kate Lorimer said.

Premier Nomvula Mokonyane is hosting a media briefing on crime stats on 20 September.

But according to Lorimer, this is of little comfort for people who did not know who would permanently head up the fight against crime in Gauteng.

National police commissioner Riah Phiyega reversed her appointment of Major General Mondli Zuma as Gauteng police commissioner after finding out that the newcomer was facing drunk-driving charges.

The position was vacated by Lieutenant General Mzwandile Petros, who quit the police service last month.
