Moyo, who is not to be confused with the escape artist Bongani Shepard Moyo, was arrested on September 2011 after a two year lengthy crime spree. He is known to act alone, targeting the Paulshof and Lonehill East communities in the early hours of the morning for house robberies, usually wielding an axe or a bush knife. He would allegedly hit as many as three homes in a single night.
Moyo has received three life sentences without the possibility of parole for rape, a total of 165 years for 11 counts of aggravated robbery and 12 years for attempted murder.
Provincial police spokesperson Lietenant-colonel Katlego Mogale said, “Multiple robbery accused Shepard ‘Axeman’ Moyo had denied everything during his trial at the Palm Ridge Magistrate’s Court. The 32-year-old denied he was ever read his rights during his arrest on 14 September while giving his statement. He also denied being given a notice of his rights after he was arrested.”
She said that Moyo, who was accused of committing 17 robberies and three rapes in the Sandton area, also denied having been arrested by the police officer who claimed to have arrested him on September 2011.
Moyo has received three life sentences without the possibility of parole for rape, a total of 165 years for 11 counts of aggravated robbery and 12 years for attempted murder.
Mogale added, “Sheperd Moyo became so brazen when he robbed houses that he would hide and wait for police and security to arrive before hitting the house next door. Moyo had a knack for climbing walls to gain entrance to properties without setting off alarms. Then he would always wait for his victims to go to bed and was very quiet in gaining entry into the house. People realised he was there only when they woke up and found him in their bedroom.”
In April 2011, Moyo was accused of forcing a couple to have sex in front of him during a house robbery.
