Sandton – SA’s bribe central
Sandton is the bribe capital of Johannesburg according to Corruption Watch and the Metro police.

Metro police spokesperson,Wayne Minaar said a substantial amount of money exchanged hands between motorists and Metro police in the Sandton area.
“We have noticed that in the more affluent areas such as Sandton, the amount of money exchanged is higher than in other areas. Although there was corruption reported in almost all of the metro’s regions, more money was given or received in Sandton,” said Minaar.
Rivonia Road, William Nicol Drive and Grayston Drive were identified as the most prominent bribing hotspots.
According to Corruption Watch, bribes were solicited from drivers whether they had contravened the law or not. If a person refused to pay a bribe, the officer usually lowered the amount requested. If the driver still resisted paying a bribe he or she was either given a fine if the law had been broken, allowed to leave without paying the bribe, or given a fine in which the officer had fabricated allegations.
When drivers say they do not have any cash on them, they are asked to go to the nearest ATM to withdraw the money.

I definitely agree with this. I am on an assignnent in SA from the UK and colleagues had warned me about this. I was stopped on Rivonia when I first arrived and the officer accused me of drinking. He said if I did not pay him he would lock me up. He was aggressive and I was frightened so I paid him R250. He let me go once he got his money. I would never live here its too corrupt.
