Piece workers become armed robbers

The Sandton police have issued a warning about new a new crime trend sweeping through the northern suburbs.

According to Captain Kym Cloete, spokesperson of the Sandton Police Station, armed robbers were posing as casual workers.

“Motorists approach ‘piece workers’ on the side of the road and make arrangements to pick them up at a certain time and place. When the motorist returns and phones the worker to find out where he is, the worker then asks about the car he is driving,” said Cloete.

The workers then approach the car, get in armed and rob the motorist.

“This is a developing trend and we urge motorists to be careful.”

Cloete advised all employers to obtain copies of all potential employees’ ID books to protect them from such criminal activity.
