Bryanston women can run safely together
BRYANSTON – Improve your running and make friends with your neighbours by joining the women from Catch Me If You Can.
Female runners living in Bryanston are invited to join a group of women for an energising and safe early morning run.
Catch Me If You Can (CMIYC) began in 2016, bringing together female runners grouped into various suburbs to run together in the security of a group.
The Bryanston-based group run by Michelle Kahn and Megan Parmenter has added an additional safety element thanks to the help of eBlockwatch founder Andre Snyman.
“The reason why eBlockwatch were asked to get involved with our group is that through the winter months there is a huge dip in support due to the dark mornings, along with load-shedding which makes the streets a bit more dangerous than they usually would feel,” said Kahn.
“Since crime started escalating in the area, the ladies have started to feel uneasy, even in larger groups.”
Kahn approached Snyman who was more than happy to get involved.

Different security companies take turns in following the women along their route, bringing an added security element.
“Cat calling on the road is a constant thing, but when you hear stories of runners being held up with guns [only to find out that they are fake later], it sends jitters through the community and you start to see a decline in support – which is the opposite of what we need.”
Parmenter was full of praise for the group of women who run alongside her during the week.
“I joined the group after moving to Bryanston and was amazed by the supportive and encouraging atmosphere,” said Parmenter.
“It’s a great community of women who have become some of my best friends. They always lift you up when you are having a bad day.
“Having the added safety, thanks to Andre, has brought with it an extra sense of freedom. I don’t even have to give a second thought to someone running from out of the bush at us. It builds such an amazing sense of community.”
Women of all ages and fitness levels are welcome to join the free runs offered on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings. For more information, follow Michelle Kahn @runningforcake_sa on Instagram or call 082 963 8264.
