Baker’s Dozen comes to Bryanston

BRYANSTON – Bowlers from Nairobi, Kenya, take on Bryanston Country Club.

Fun and new friendships were the order of the day when Bryanston Country Club hosted a team from Kenya for a day of bowls.

The 12 visitors from Nairobi, who were named Baker’s Dozen thanks to South African bowling legend Gerry Baker’s involvement in forming the team, formed up to play against Bryanston on a hot and sunny morning on 13 November.

The format included four teams of trips (teams of three players) playing 21 ends. They were on a tour that included playing against five bowls clubs in Gauteng before going on a holiday together in Cape Town.

Bryanston Country Club was the second club to host the team after Country Club Johannesburg hosted them the day before.

“We have some international players in the team who have played for their country,” Baker’s Dozen team manager, Eric Langton said.

“We hope to get a lot of fun out of this and have new experiences. Some of us have played in Commonwealth tournaments but some have never played outside Kenya.”

A similar objective was shared by the chairperson of bowls at Bryanston Country Club, Wayne Woodland. “It was an exceedingly positive day, a good time was had by all on the green and socially afterwards,” he said.

The result was 22–2 to Bryanston Country Club but the visitors were also winners in that they achieved what they set out to do.
