Cosatu confirms Vavi’s suspension

UNION federation Cosatu has finally confirmed the suspension of general secretary Zwelinzima Vavi.

There has speculation during the past 24 hours that he had been suspended pending an investigation into the alleged sexual misconduct involving him and a junior staff member.

National spokesman Patrick Craven said after lengthy discussion on Wednesday, an agreement was reached to conduct a full investigation into the allegations.

In addition, both the general secretary and the staff member will attend disciplinary hearings, chaired by an independent person, at which they would have every opportunity to present their case and answer charges.

“In the meantime the general secretary and the staff member have been placed on special leave, in the light of the nature and seriousness of the allegations,” said Craven.
