Many South Africans are eagerly awaiting their opportunity to vote on 8 May in the national and provincial elections. The Sandton Chronicle spoke to learners from Bryanston High School about why they think it’s important to vote as a part of Caxton’s #IMadeMyMark elections coverage. Here is what they had to say …
KERYN VAN ROOYEN: I will definitely be voting because I don’t think that our country is going in the right direction and I think a change is needed so I feel like I can play a role. I think many young people maybe ignore the situation as though it doesn’t affect them.
CAITLIN BAIRD: If you don’t vote you shouldn’t complain. I know that we’re not obliged to vote, but if you vote you have a say. I think there should be a mixture of parties so that our government is diverse and everybody’s opinions are represented.
JOEL COMBE: I think it’s my obligation to vote because so many people sacrificed their lives and their well-being for that right. Even though it might not have affected me, I do still think it is my obligation to exercise my right to vote.JANE RAMALOKO: I will be voting on the 8th because I feel like I want to vote for a party that will make a difference and create change in South Africa.
ANELISA BUDULA: I will definitely be voting because I feel like it is our responsibility especially since we want to see change. A lot of people complain about things happening in our country but then they don’t take part to make that change happen.
