SANDTON – Following the service delivery protest in Alex that led to the #AlexShutdown demonstrations, the community then went to City of Johannesburg Region E offices in Sandton to submit their memorandum of complaints.
WAYDE VAN ROOYEN: I think it wasn't fair at all. Considering also that the weather was bad that morning but they soldiered on. I hope it eventually pays out.
The Sandton Chronicle team went to streets and found out from the public whether they thought it was fair that Alex residents had to go all the way to Sandton before they were taken seriously by the authorities. Here’s what they had to say…
ANTHONY PILLAY: When it comes to service delivery, I think all means must be done by the parties affected even if it means going to Sandton. At the end of the day, they are the ones suffering.
DELANO ROOI: Unfortunately in South Africa we live in, taking action is the only way you’ll get what you want. I don’t think it was fair but if they want to be heard then it was necessary for them to go to Sandton.
NTOMBI JIKA: I don’t think it’s unfair that Alex residents had to go to extreme measures to get attention and be heard. Sandton or Alex, it doesn’t matter, we all should have equal rights.
FIONA MAGONARE: It’s not fair at all, I think that authorities should’ve done something from the get-go when the protest was still in Alex.
