The headmaster and the senior executive staff of Hyde Park High School initiated and requested that the school be searched for any illegal substances or weapons.
The assistance of the South African Police K9 Unit was enlisted on 21 February as a proactive, precautionary and ongoing attempt to keep the school drug free and provide a safe learning environment. The classrooms, learners’ bags and learners were searched by the dogs and South African Police representatives in a thorough and well-executed, unannounced event ensuring that there was no opportunity for evasion as the school community had not been forewarned.
The headmaster, Manolis Vogiatzis, was present throughout this search and was pleased with the outcome where no illegal substances or illegal items were found. He emphasised that the school has a zero tolerance policy for any contraband and will continue to implement the necessary education to ensure the school’s learners are well informed through external professional presentations and make the correct choices in dealing with this challenging matter.
