Man arrested following dog fighting in Marlboro Gardens
MARLBORO GARDENS – The SPCA is investigating all leads regarding the case.
The Sandton SPCA worked quickly to ensure that a man, suspected of being involved in dog fighting in Marlboro Gardens, has been arrested.
Lindiwe Mkhondwane, the acting general manager at the Sandton SPCA explained that inspectors from the SPCA raided a property in Marlboro Gardens on 20 February after they received information from a concerned member of the public. The community member was concerned that two dogs had been incited to fight against each other.
“Video footage was sent through to our emergency number. In this video, two dogs can be seen fighting whilst spectators can be seen and heard inciting the dogs attacking each other,” explained Mkhondwane.
Inspectors were accompanied by two police officials from the K9-Dog Unit to the property where they found two dogs confined to a pen. The suspect denied any knowledge of the dog fighting incident, however, his voice could be heard on the video footage that was found on his cell phone. On the video, he was instructing one of the dogs to kill the other one.
The suspect was arrested and taken to Bramley Police Station where he was detained and his cell phone was seized. Criminal charges were laid against the suspect for contravention of the Animals Protection Act.
On 21 February, the suspect appeared at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court. He was granted R1 000 bail and was released. The case has been postponed to the 20 March for further investigation.
Mkhondwane added that more leads have been coming in and they are following up. “We take dog fighting very seriously and will ensure that the dogs get the justice that they deserve,” she concluded.
