 Petrol price protest

In July and September this year, various people on social media spread rumours about a mass protest about the increasing petrol prices. People Against Petrol and Paraffin Increases warned of a nationwide shutdown to protest against the numerous petrol price increases that South Africans had been faced with throughout the year. However, in the end, no shutdown took place and the protests were purely speculation on social media.

A massive billboard on the corner of Sandton Drive and William Nicol caused a flurry of questions of social media. The billboard, which said, “Tayla Henshall will you marry me?” caught the attention of many motorists. Many motorists were desperate to find out if Henshall had agreed to the proposal or if it was a publicity stunt. It turned out that both were true as the proposal was a teaser for the upcoming season of the Wedding Bashers.

One on Nicol

The most recent social media stir was caused by the apparent launch of a drive-thru bar. The concept received widespread criticism on social media with many stating that the bar would encourage drinking and driving. However, it was soon revealed that the bar was not real and rather a campaign to raise awareness about the dangers of drinking and driving.

The One on Nicol ‘drive-thru bar’ caused widespread criticism online.

Drunk police officer

A video of a drunken police officer outside the Sandton Police Station went viral on social media. It emerged that the police officer was off-duty and on leave when the video was recorded, however, an investigation was opened.

The man who dumped a dog

A man who was caught on CCTV footage dumping his dead dog on the side of the road caused widespread outrage. The Sandton SPCA and the man’s place of work both released statements condemning the man’s actions. On social media, all the man’s personal details were released and shortly afterwards he offered an unreserved apology.
