Wendywood Primary wins Sandton derby against Bryneven
SANDTON – Thrilling soccer derby sees Sandton girls play their best against each other.

Local sports derbies often produce the most exciting matches no matter what the sport or final score is.
When Wendywood and Bryneven primary schools took each other on in the Discovery Knockout Cup soccer semi-final it was no different.
The schools were in the U14 girls’ semi-final of the tournament held at Pirates Sports Club on 1 August. Wendywood’s girls are seasoned veterans of the tournament and enjoyed much success in recent years, while Bryneven featured a girls team in the tournament for the first time.
Three of Bryneven’s boys’ teams and one other Wendywood girls team had also reached the semi-finals of the tournament in their divisions.
But when the derby came it was all or nothing for these sides. Both teams had to win several matches leading up to the semis.
Yet still, the players started tentatively, conceding a few close chances at either end.
Once Wendywood scored a goal from a fierce drive into the bottom left corner of the goal, the game heated up. Possession was more or less even but Wendywood enjoyed better chances on goal, scoring their second goal before half-time and a third in the second half to finish as victors with a 3–0 win.

“We play Bryneven often and it sways between who wins pretty evenly,” said the winning side’s assistant coach, Nyeleti Shikwambana. She added that every team that had reached the semis was good, and before her team’s final against De La Salle Holy Cross College they discussed self-confidence and using space.
Bryneven’s head of sports, Previn Naicker conceded that Wendywood were the better team on the day, but cautioned them on what awaited them next year.
“We had six young girls in the side who will play again as U14s next year and some excellent youngsters coming through who will join them,” he said.
“They will have lots of talent and experience to contend next year.”
Otherwise, Naicker said Bryneven had enjoyed a good season in soccer and the school looked forward to its U12 boys playing in the final of the knockout cup.
Wendywood’s U12 and U14 girls teams are in the finals too.
