St Stithians College hosted a two-day Raising Boys and Girls conference to discuss and engage on issues surrounding education.
Among other topics, experts at the conference discussed diversity and inclusion, how social media impacts children, gender non-conforming children and how culture shapes teenagers.
Some of the experts who shared their knowledge with teachers and parents at the conference included, Sue Langley, an Australian neuroscientist; Dr Ian Moll, the head of Educational Information Technology at the University of the Witwatersrand; and Redi Tlhabi, a talk show host and journalist.
During her discussion, Tlhabi highlighted the importance of raising young boys and girls who are not only focused on personal gratification but on creating social change. She said that youngsters who attend private schools are privileged to receive a good education and those schools should empower other children.
“I have a challenge, and my challenge is that these halls must do more than just present us with the opportunity to have a dialogue.
“I’m inviting you to look beyond the government and what it is and isn’t doing and realise that you have inherited the problems of society, you have the power to influence these young minds and teach them to live for something bigger than their immediate gratification.”
Tlhabi, who shared stories of her childhood, said that her teachers had been her biggest inspiration and had pushed her to achieve great things. “When I reflect on all the moments that have made the biggest impact in my life, all of them were in the school environment.”
The conference concluded with a question and answer forum where guests could engage with the speakers at the event.
