House on Rose Way in flames

KELVIN – A house caught on fire on Rose Way Street around noon on 14 October.

The community of Kelvin was brought to a halt on 14 October when a house on 8 Rose Way Street went up in flames at about 12.30pm.

The fire started in the room of the gardener who was on the property and spread to six rooms of the house before the Randburg Fire Station attended the scene.

Homeowner Chris Booysen said he was not at home when the fire began. “I had not been alerted to the fire and arrived home seeing smoke coming from my house,” said Booysen.

“We are unsure of the cause of the fire, but the matter is being investigated… As soon as I got home I removed all the gas bottles and disconnected the electricity to minimise the effect of the fire.”

Booysen said he tried to call the Sandton and Alex fire departments, but both of them were occupied at the time so Randburg was the first to arrive.

A house caught fire at 8 Rose Way in Kelvin on 14 October, causing damage to six rooms in the house.

Spokesperson for Emergency Management Services at the City of Joburg, Nana Radebe said, “City of Joburg Emergency Management Services received a call at 12.27pm about a structural fire in Kelvin on Saturday. When the first vehicle arrived on scene at 12.51pm, six rooms of the house were well alight. Another fire engine and an Air Truck were dispatched to assist and the fire was fully extinguished at 15.05pm. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.”

Area manager of the Sandton Guardians, Hassan Saib said Duma Security alerted the Sandton Guardians Whatsapp group about the fire and about a dozen community members arrived to assist on the scene. Saib added that Booysen’s gardener and his two children were home at the time of the fire.

Seven people who reside at the home have all sought to find alternative accommodation because of the extent of the damage.

The Randburg Fire Department was the first to arrive at the scene of a house fire in Rose Way in Kelvin.
