The daily grind made easy
SANDTON – Rising entrepreneur and director of Startup Grind Joburg Beth Malatji is all about connecting and assisting local entrepreneurs to become successful.
Young businesswoman Beth Malatji (26) is all about connecting and assisting local entrepreneurs through her work as director of Startup Grind Johannesburg.
Startup Grind is a global startup community, powered by Google, designed to educate, inspire and connect entrepreneurs.
Malatji studied human resource management at the University of Limpopo after school but soon realised that she was never going to find fulfilment while working for someone else. She subsequently moved to Johannesburg and launched Wealth Ladder magazine, aimed at empowering entry-level entrepreneurs by interviewing hard-to-reach influencers in the business world.
“I wanted to create a brand out of myself and fulfil myself,” she said. “I found that a job would never fulfil what I wanted to create.”
After selling the magazine, she was privileged to join the Startup Grind team, working similarly to connect entrepreneurs and help them learn from each other.
Startup Grind Joburg meets once a month, inviting any interested investors and local entrepreneurs to join, network and be inspired by successful people in the industry. Malatji conducts open interviews with influencers, discovering practical tips for success.
“People love sugar-coated inspirational stories, but walk away from them not knowing where to start. That’s why I believe that practical guides are so important.”
Since launching Startup Grind Joburg in May, Malatji has attracted an average of 120 people to her events interviewing people including the first CEO of Google South Africa Stafford Masie, radio personality Gareth Cliff and Johanna Mukoki of Travel With Flair.
Malatji has also written two books, her first, The Bootstrapper’s Lifesaving Hacks discusses how to start a business without external financial aid, the second serves as a how-to for starting a successful company from scratch titled Cultivating Wealthy Entrepreneurs.
Startup Grind also gives opportunities for new entrepreneurs to discuss their challenges with more experienced businesspeople and find helpful and innovative solutions.
“The journey as an entrepreneur is lonely. How can you travel without others to support you? I believe that Startup Grind helps you to realise your opportunities and learn from people with experience who are willing to help.”
Details: Startup Grind Joburg will host their next event, which includes a fireside chat with co-founder and COO of Hirsch’s, Margaret Hirsch, on 24 October at OPEN at 138 West Street, Sandton.
