Uber drivers and Johannesburg Park Gautrain station security officers are currently under attack from meter taxi drivers. Assitance from Metro police and SAPS has been requested.
Tensions between the two modes of transport have seen incidents of protests, petrol-bombing, national strikes and two women being physically removed from an Uber vehicle by meter taxi drivers.
Protests broke outside the Sandton Gautrain Station on 17 July as well. Mothapo said the situation in Sandton is calm at the moment and static police are deployed to monitor the area. “There is a free flow of traffic and the local police and other police members from various units have joined forces with the JMPD, and various security companies, to ensure stability and prevent and any unlawful incidents from occurring.”
Mothapo said, “We are not going to hesitate to arrest any perpetrators who break the law.”
@HermanMashaba @MichaelSun168 surely it’s time to interdict metered taxis from being in the proximity of gautrain stations. They’re outlaws.
