Update on Parkmore road closures

SANDTON – The Parkmore road closures have been widely discussed and here is an update.

Road closures in Parkmore have been fully operational since May and the Parkmore Community Association has provided a lowdown on the impact these closures have had so far.

A press release from the association stated, “The most positive result to report is that crime has radically dropped. Not only in the closed areas, but across the suburb, with the exception of 13th Street between Virginia and Marie.

“The types of crime, too, have changed. We have seen one armed driveway robbery during this time and a significant drop in household robberies. Crime has fallen overall from around five to seven incidents per week to close to three to four with the majority of incidents being theft out of motor vehicles or theft of motor vehicles.”

It was further highlighted that the number of contributors to the actual road closures still remains a challenge and that the two committees for Parkmore Central and Estate are working hard to get this number up. “A comprehensive email around how the guards work and questions you may have was sent out recently to Parkmore Central Residents following a public meeting on 21 September. If you would like a copy please email [us].”

The Sandton Chronicle dealt with the issue of crime in two streets in Parkmore, namely 13th and 12th streets, in the article, Crime hotspots, Week ending 28 September.

“The issue of 13th Street traffic was raised at this meeting and the following feedback submitted. Johannesburg Road Agency is conducting traffic surveys during the course of this week [ending 14 October] and until such time as that is complete, we cannot open more gates.”

According to the association, it is not realistic to open all the gates in Parkmore Central, as the contributing members then complain. “We are asking residents affected to offer feedback such as, on a Wednesday when the gates are left open for Pikitup, does the traffic load lessen?”

It was added that until such time as the petition from 13th Street is heard by the Petition Commission, the agency must have no involvement.

“If you said you would contribute to road closures and paid your capital, expect a knock on your door soon as the committees are working hard to increase donations ahead of the renewal process scheduled for next year. Remember the schemes are run by the individual committees for each area. The association assists with the security management and with the collection of funds only.”
