Nedbank Golf Challenge supports young golfers

ILLOVO – Underprivileged golfers get one step closer to a scratch handicap.

The South African Golf Development Board (SAGDB) received another major boost from the Nedbank Golf Challenge, hosted by Gary Player and its partners, with a recent donation of R450 000 for its various projects.

Young golfers attended the handover of the substantial donation at The Wanderers Golf Club in Illovo on 21 September.

A portion of the funds will be used to purchase golf shoes, shirts, balls, coaching aids, gloves and other equipment, as well as apparel for the development golfers from Alexandra. The donation will also be used to fund the Border chapter and its costs for tournaments, coaching, transport and players’ meals.

“The SAGDB is extremely proud and thankful to be associated with The Sports Trust and Nedbank. The sponsorship goes a long way to enhance and sustain our projects. It is through support such as this that we can ensure a programme that delivers results and offers our young golfers some extra benefits,” said Grant Hepburn, managing director of the development board.

This year’s Nedbank Golf Challenge, hosted by Gary Player, will take place from 10 to 13 November and will be the first under the tournament’s new status as part of the European Tour’s Elite Final Series.

The tournament will be played at Sun City the week before the European Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship.

Once again, a development four-ball will play in The Sports Trust Golf Challenge on 14 November, including the three development golfers comprising Siyanda Mwandla, Dylan Jacobs and South African Disabled Golf Association golfer Charles Williams.

“As founding trustees of The Sports Trust, we know the value of the work done by the South African Golf Development Board and are proud to be able to support this through the Nedbank Golf Challenge. The reason this tournament is the longest running sports sponsorship in the bank’s history is exactly because of this social impact that it also makes,” said Tobie Badenhorst, Nedbank head of sponsorships and cause marketing.

“The donation marks another successful contribution by The Sports Trust to the development of South African sport in underprivileged communities.”
