Kelvin Drive’s speed limit a joke
A speed limit of 40km/h? On a downhill? How ridiculous. Or even on the uphill to work.

My car may just come to a complete standstill then. Why not say, “Drivers, please get out and roll your car down the hill slowly… and oh so cautiously… or push it up the hill instead of actually driving, so that inconsiderate pedestrians are prioritised.”
The deaths that have taken place, I’m assuming are pedestrians. These people clearly cannot estimate how far away a car is, and then run across the road. Why not use some common sense? Walk a little further up and cross at the traffic lights, or even use pedestrian sidewalks that have been provided if they aren’t crossing the road.
I still cannot believe there is a speed limit of 40km/h on a main road.
At Caxton, we employ humans to generate daily fresh news, not AI intervention. Happy reading!
Having been fined R1500 on this 40 km/hr 400 metre stretch or road, I would like to make the following points :
1. This stretch is not sufficiently sign-posted. If you enter Kelvin Drive from Stiglingh or Gary streets you will not see any 40 km/hr sign and would assume that the general urban minimum of 60 km/hr would apply (except for schools where a lower speed limit would be acceptable but there is no school in this area). Even the 40 km/hr sign near the southern limit of this 40 km/hr stretch on kelvin Drive is very difficult to spot particularly if acar or truck i stopped at the stop sign coming out of the shops.
2. In the Sandton Chronicle dated 23rd August Judith Taylor talks about some accidents there but no doubt these were caused by motorists driving at more like 100 km/hr through this stretch. This stretch can be negotiated at 60 km/hr or even 80 km/hr with the greatest of ease. The nearby Ballaclare right-angle corner over the river is given the normal 60 km/hr limit yet one cannot go around that bend at more than about 30 km/hr. So why make a big issue of this stretch of Kelvin Drive ?
It would be hard to ride a bicycle at under 40 km/hr down this road !
I also think R1500 for 75-80 km/hr is extremely excessive when compared to other offences.
I would like to see the 60 km/hr reinstated here or leave it at 40 km/hr but do not fine motorists for travelling at 40-60 km/hr. Those people fined should have their fines re-aligned to the 60 km/hr rule. I think my first point is particularly relevant to these fines being re-evaluated and this point should be made to AARTO.
The article misses the main point really. Speed trapping at that location is not legal. It is contrary to the TCSP (Technical Committee for standards and procedures) as mandated by office of the public prosecutor governing speed enforcement as the location is within 300m of a speed limit change. The 60km per hour sign after the bridge towards Woodmead is within 300m of where they sit, and hence no need to bother yourself with the fines…they cannot be enforced as they are un-procedural. Furthermore given this, the site could not possibly have been surveyed in and be a permissible enforcement point under law. Don’t be victimised by lawless traffic cops because you are uninformed.
I also find the speed limit a bit ridiculous, BUT as I cannot afford ridiculous fines stick to the speed limit. However other motorist who can obviously afford fines sit on my backside to try and force me to go faster and I’ve even had guys giving me signs and yesterday one let go of his steering wheel and threw both his arms in the air! So either I am going to get wiped out or get a hefty fine. What do I do?????
Ridiculous…….that’s an understatement!!@!!!! The same thing happens to me when I travel that road which is daily!!!!
Cars sitting on my backside, swearing and vulgar signs whilst my 3year is in the car with me that’s unacceptable
