Communities clean it up together

SANDTON – Sandton residents came together on 9 April to clean up and beautify their area.

On 9 April, residents of Bordeaux, Willowild and Hurlingham became true active citizens when they came together to pick up litter on Republic Road from William Nicol Drive to Jan Smuts Avenue.

One of the residents who participated in this clean-up, Elinor Bodinger, said the residents of Willowild and Hurlingham started from William Nicol Drive and worked their way up towards Jan Smuts Avenue and Bordeaux South and one family from Bordeaux North worked their way down towards William Nicol Drive. These efforts included 60 volunteers and four different suburbs which all came together with one aim, to keep the city clean and tidy.

Bodinger reiterated that these efforts are not only to assist the city in the midst of the Pikitup strike, but that the residents did more than pick up discarded rubbish as they also “got down and dirty collecting rubbish, scuffling overgrown grass and dirt from the road’s middle and side islands”.

Bodinger ended off by saying that this was a great opportunity for the four suburbs to come together to look after the public spaces. She further explained that this is not the first time the areas have come together as they have done other clean-ups in the past.

When executive mayor Mpho Parks Tau addressed the media on 29 March, he urged individuals to become active citizens. These residents are the perfect example of being an active citizen as they are actively trying to improve the appearance and cleanliness of the city. Tau also expressed his frustration when he said, “The streets of Johannesburg have become a dumping site.”

The beauty of the clean-up is that residents of all ages got involved, even young children who were determined to clean up and beautify the roads that we all use on a daily basis.
