Advice for life’s journey

ALEXANDRA - Tips on achieving your full potential.

Lack of principles and fear of the unknown are human frailties known to limit people from achieving their potential.

Social scientists and those with wise council offer those struggling with these issues the following advice:

  • Don’t compare your life to others or judge them as you don’t know their life journey. We all have distinct purposes in life and should always act to our best.
  • Don’t envy others’ possessions as you don’t know how they got them and the price they had to pay. Not all that glitters is gold.
  • Don’t act the way you feel but the way you want to feel. If sad, act like you are happy, and you will eventually become happy. High achievers get disappointed a lot because they fail many times but optimism helps them see an advantage in adversity and they make the best of every situation.
  • Make peace with your past including your mistakes. Forgiveness, including forgiving those who have hurt you is the first step to progress.
  • Don’t answer promises of get-rich-quick schemes because it won’t be you who gets rich quick. If it sounds too good to be true, then it most likely is. There is nothing good for free in the world.
  • Seek help through meaningful relationships and also help others get what they want.
  • Understand that you can only change what you can. No matter how important it may be, sometimes it’s better to do your own part and leave the rest to others.
  • Learn to speak less and listen more. High achievers don’t talk for the sake of it but because they have something to say.
  • Get out of your comfort zone by doing something every day that scares you, except endangering oneself and others.
  • Be sure you know how deep the water is before jumping off a bridge. Always determine the price you have to pay for your every decision. Many great people are college dropouts, but they knew what they wanted and understood the implications.
  • What others think of you is none of your business. People will always talk about you, and if they don’t, then you are probably not worth much. What matters most is believing in yourself.
  • Never test the depth of the river with both feet or put all your eggs in one basket. Rather, spread out your risks as there is no success without calculated risks.
  • Seek out and spend time with people who have integrity and who will be honest with you.
