Since October last year, Grimett has been dismissed, conned and unemployed because of the fraudulent activities of a labour law service provider in Rivonia.
Grimett said the series of unfortunate events began a few months ago when he was unfairly dismissed from a company in Woodmead, Sandton.
Immediately after Grimett was dismissed, he set up a meeting with an attorney from a labour law services firm, which he found online.
Grimett said the meeting was strange because the so-called attorney did not ask for any documentation and he was not asked to sign any papers. One week after this informal meeting, Grimett was told that the attorney had managed to secure a two-month settlement from his ex-employer.
Grimett said he thought he deserved a larger settlement and told the attorney that he was going to go to the CCMA.
It was at this point that Grimett smelt a rat. The attorney told him that they had already obtained a case number from the CCMA. However, when he phoned the CCMA, there was no record of his case. When he confronted the labour law firm, they told him that he would be unsuccessful if he tried to get a settlement through the CCMA.
Grimett said he became too desperate to wait any longer and called the attorney in Rivonia and told her that he would take the two months settlement that was offered to him. Weeks went by but no money was deposited into his account. He eventually contacted the attorney’s personal assistant and she informed him that R96 000 had been paid to the labour law firm for the settlement. The personal assistant also provided Grimett with a proof of payment.
Grimett has had to seek help from attorney Melanie van Wyk. Van Wyk said they have sent a letter of demand to the fraudulent firm and have now issued summons.
Grimett is currently unemployed and has been unable to pay off his debts. He said that people do not care about anyone but themselves and after his experience, one cannot blame him for having this view.
