Customers are encouraged to convert from conventional meters to the new smart meters’ prepaid billing mode, as it has several benefits. Eskom said customers would also benefit from changing their lifestyle behaviours and the way they consume electricity. The organisation aims to assist and educate community members on the new meters in order to become legal, safe and efficient electricity users, and also plans to inform the public about the benefits.
These include:
- Educating the public on the direct benefits of smart prepaid meters.
- Educating customers on energy efficiency in the home.
- Helping the public understand the dangers of meter tampering and the benefits of legal electricity usage.
- Assist the public in reducing electricity theft and preventing power outages.
- Informing the public of the disadvantages of over consumption.
Residents in Midrand and Sandton are encouraged to work with Eskom to ensure a swift rollout of the programme.
