HAVE YOUR SAY: Are hopes of becoming a rainbow nation for the next generation achievable?
JOBURG - Community members were asked for their thoughts on racism in schools and whether or not there truly is hope for the next generation to become a rainbow nation.
SISA DUBE: Yes, I think racism still exists at schools and the country as a whole. The only way there can be hope for the next generation is if equality is implemented at schools as well as equal opportunities for all races.
REABESTWE MAFORAH: Yes, racism still exists at schools because certain lecturers or teachers address pupils in Afrikaans, knowing that they teach English pupils. I believe that if those teachers and lecturers address pupils in a standard language understood by all, there will not be all this tension and drama happening. I think it will take time to become a rainbow nation.
CELESTE MAY: Yes, there is racism because statues that are a reminder of apartheid are not being pulled down at universities. It will take time before we are a rainbow nation, but I believe we will get there if we all give each other the respect we deserve.
KATHRYN WILLIS: Racism is unfair at schools and pupils are there to learn and better themselves. We can only be a rainbow nation if we treat one another with respect, no matter where they come from, rich or poor. We need to understand one another and respect each others’ differences and cultures.
KENNY MAMABOLO: I think that some universities do not want to acknowledge the end of the apartheid era because they teach and address pupils in a language these pupils do not excel in. We will probably only be a rainbow nation in the next 20 years. There are still many hurdles we need to go over as a nation.
