BRACe hosts its first meeting for the year

KELVIN – The Buccleuch Residents' Action Community (BRACe) recently hosted its first quarterly meeting of the year, chaired by deputy chairperson Maria Gerondoudis, in Kelvin.

First up was honouring the late Peter Berner who passed away on 8 January and was an active member in the community and the association. During the gathering, a Peter Berner Fund was established to honour the contribution Berner made to the organisation. A percentage of members’ annual membership fees will be allocated to the newly-created fund which aims to roll out security initiatives in the community.

Feedback on a proposed new high school to be built in the area was provided by Gerondoudis. “BRACe chairperson, Dumisa Dlamini, has investigated establishing a high school in Buccleuch [but] unfortunately, the suburb does not meet the provincial criteria for our own high school,” Gerondoudis said.

She also spoke about litter, and the subsequent stench, in the Juksei River area, adding that there was no solution to the ongoing matter. However, the association would continue engaging with the various stakeholders to resolve the matter.

Another issue discussed in the meeting was the low-lying bridge in the area, which was cited as a safety hazard and a litter trap. “We and councillor Bongani [Nkomo] have asked the council to raise the bridge to address the problem; council is aware of the request and Nkomo is continuing to push for project funding.”

Other issues discussed included crime, service delivery and outreach programmes by the association. The date for the next meeting will be announced soon.
