Car hijacked in Sandton with three Korean nationals inside

SANDTON – Suspects hijacked and robbed three Korean nationals who were in Sandton for business.

Lieutenant Colonel André de Klerk from Sandton police said the suspects were driving in a dark grey BMW 1 Series, when they drove in front of a black Audi A6 which the Korean nationals were in.

He said the driver of the Audi noticed four suspects inside the BMW at the corner of South Road and Marlboro Drive in Morningside. “The suspects drove in front of the Audi to block their way,” explained Lt Col de Klerk.

This continued until Corner West and South roads when the cars stopped. “Three suspects got out of the car and told the driver to get out,” added Lt Col de Klerk. “The driver tried to drive away and that’s when one suspect shot at the passenger side.”

He said the driver was searched and his iPhone 6 was taken; then one of the suspects drove away in the Audi with the three Korean nationals in the back seat of the car.

Lt Col de Klerk said the Korean nationals were robbed and left inside the car at an unknown location. “One of the nationals then drove the car to OR Tambo Airport.”

He added that the motive behind the hijacking incident was to rob the Korean nationals of their luggage and cellphones and not to hijack the vehicle that they were in. Lt Col de Klerk also said no one was injured during the incident.

“The Korean nationals have now left the country to go back to Korea,” he said.

No arrests have been made but the police are still investigating.
