Siobhaun Courty, a teacher at the school explained that Green Office, a cartridge distributing company, came to illustrate to the school how to prevent ink cartridges from landing up in landfill sites. “They also create jobs for disabled people through an organisation called greenABLE,” added Courty.
“Ronnie Recycle is a hungry guy who wants to eat all our paper and paper-based products,” Courty said about the mascot for paper recycling company, MPACT.
“These can be re-used and it will save our trees.”
Courty added that since the introduction of the Recycling Club at the school as an extramural this year, Buccleuch pupils have started growing green hearts.
“Our aim is to educate our pupils on how to care more about our environment, as well as the future of the earth,” she added.
“We will be looking into interesting ways to recycle items to re-use them around the school too. We currently have two paper banks as well as a glass recycling station. We are in the process of acquiring plastic and metal recycling stations too.”
She said the school had exciting plans to set up recycling bins so that the mindset of recycling can be instilled into pupils. “We hope this will become our general way of life at school and at home,” she added.
Courty added that the Education Department had incorporated environmental issues in subjects across the curriculum.
“We take pride in our school by planting beautiful plants to celebrate spring, as well as have regular litter clean-ups,” said Courty.
“We want to make a difference, in our school, our homes, our community, and ultimately, our world.”
