Cub Scouts of the Sandton District host a night hike

SANDTON - Cub Scouts of the Sandton District and their families, hiked along the Braamfontein Spruit.

About 250 boys and girls of the 1st Bryanston, 1st Morningside, 1st Parkmore, 1st Peter Place and 1st River Trail groups took part in the hike. This year they were joined by a contingent of Cub Scouts from the American International School of Johannesburg.

The hike started near Hamilton Park and followed the spruit upriver to a halfway pit-stop near Riverside Park. Arriving just as it was starting to get dark, the Cubs were treated to some ice-cream.

After this brief stop, the torches came out and the remainder of the hike was completed in darkness. Finishing at the 1st Bryanston Scout Hall in West Hertford Road, the hikers were welcomed with a hot mug of soup.

The evening ended around the cheerful blaze of a roaring campfire, where songs were sung and stories were shared with each other.

The Cub programme caters for boys and girls between the ages of seven and 11. Adventurous outdoor activities are aimed at developing the character and self-confidence of the youngsters. Once a Cub turns 11, they join a Scout troop where a more advanced programme of leadership development is provided to help young people achieve their full potential.
