JOHANNESBURG – The wounded Springbok team proved to be a much tougher opponent for Samoa to face after the South Africans ran in six tries to none in their Group B encounter against Samoa.

After being put under pressure in the opening 15 minutes of the game, an intercept by JP Pietersen seemed to be the turning point of the game as anything else that followed seemed to be dictated by the Springboks.

An introduction of the likes of Damian de Allende as well as an impressive display by the Springbok forwards seemed to be the main difference between the two sides.

However, although the South Africans secured such an impressive victory, coach Heyneke Meyer could still address the issue of discipline, considering that the Springboks conceded 15 penalties compared to 11 by Samoa.

One of the star players on the day, Schalk Burger, contributed to the team’s success by scoring a try, making nine tackles and gaining 51 metres for his team.

The introduction of centre De Allende seemed to be one of the major differences between the two teams.
