49 illegal shacks demolished in Sunninghill

SUNNINGHILL – A total of 49 illegal shacks were demolished in Sunninghill on 16 September in a planned inter-cluster green belt operation conducted by Metro police and local security companies Savika and Imvula.

The shacks were positioned on the spruit between Rivonia and Acter roads, and between Maxwell Drive and the R55.

Spokesperson for Metro police, Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said, “Any shack which gets erected without the payment of rent is illegal.”

According to Ward 93 councillor, Annette Deppe, illegal squatting is a big problem and is not isolated to Sunninghill and Paulshof.

“The City of Joburg does not have a solution and the country does not care for the people who are flocking over our borders,” she said.

Albert Gumbo, chairperson for the Paulshof Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association, welcomed the raid and said he hoped it would result in fewer break-ins. “We have had a few break-ins attributed to an increase in vagrants, and we are happy that the City and Metro police have acceded to our request for these raids.”

Linda Gildenhuys, chair of Sunninghill Community Security commended Metro police for their consistent good work. “Metro police have helped us greatly,” she said.

“We have worked hard to establish a good relationship with them.” Gildenhuys explained that although Metro police did a great job, plans were in place to come up with alternative solutions to keep the area safe.

The operation also included a road block on the corner of Leeuwkop and Witkoppen roads where more than 100 vehicles were stopped and searched.

Deppe and Minaar confirmed that the operations would continue.
