The programme has benefited more than 30 interns to date, with some being employed at the school while others were appointed to independent and State schools. Some have even gone on to be promoted to heads of department and deputy heads.
The school has now reviewed its policy on interns due to three factors:
- The worldwide recognition of the importance of foundation phase education
- The report on teacher supply and demand by the Centre for Enterprise and Development whose research showed that there will be critical shortages of mathematics, language and foundation phase teachers in South Africa in the coming years
- The National Education Department’s commitment to providing an Early Childhood Development or foundation phase programme.
The school has consequently expanded its internship programme to specifically include foundation phase trainees in a special programme, Isematholeni Intern Incubator.
The school offers an opportunity to train as a teacher in an outstanding, forward-thinking and Christian-based environment. Unisa studies are supplemented with hands-on practical experience and the interns are supported by a dedicated mentor.
To qualify for the programme, the following are required: matric endorsement with results that qualify for a Bachelors pass, competence in English and one other first additional language, passion for foundation phase (Grade 0 to 2) teaching, South African citizenship, full CV, and letter of motivation from the candidate and a reference from the head of the canditate’s school, institution or current employer.
University students with a good academic track record and currently studying for a Bachelor of Education may also apply.
