UPDATE: NWJ confirms attempted robbery at Woodmead Retail Park

WOODMEAD - An attempted robbery at NWJ, a jewellery shop at Woodmead Retail Park, was halted after the smoke from a panic button caused the suspects to scatter.

The retail park’s communications officer, Nirosh Moodley, said the attempted robbery was unsuccessful because one of the staff members pushed a smoke panic button as soon as they realised the shop was being held up.

“A quick-thinking staff member of NJW foiled an attempted robbery by a group of four people who had pretended to be window shoppers before entering the store,” explained Moodley.

He added that the suspects immediately ran out of the smoke-filled shop to a waiting car near the store. “No one was hurt, nothing was taken and no shots were fired,” said Moodley. He said security responded immediately and gave chase, but none of the suspects were caught.

“We are giving our full support to the investigation, including providing the police with our CCTV footage,” explained Moodley.

“Our security will assess how to [address] any vulnerabilities. The safety of our shoppers is our highest priority.”
