Spar Women’s Race in aid of breast cancer

ROSEBANK - Spar Women's Race will take place on 11 October from the Wanderers Club to create awareness about breast cancer.

The Spar Women’s 5km and 10km race will take place on 11 October and will be in support of breast cancer and creating awareness about the illness. The race will start at the Wanderers Club.

The race was referred to as South Africa’s most beautiful road race by promotions and advertising manager for Spar, Piet van Vuuren, at the media launch.

“This is our 23rd women’s race and we are proud of it because the well-being of our women is important to us,” said Van Vuuren.

The money raised from the race will go to Reach for Recovery, a breast cancer support group and non-profit organisation that is run by a group of volunteers.

“We offer patient support, and a prosthesis service is also provided with the focus on indigent women who would not be able to afford such a service. It is available to any woman who requests it,” said Beulah Janelowitz of Reach for Recovery.

Emcee at the launch, Kass Naidoo, founder of gsport4girls said, “It is said that sport unites South Africa. This is evident as more and more people have come to join and support the Spar Women’s Race. I believe as women we need to lead, and lead with pride.”

Well-known athletes taking part in the race will include Rutendo Nyahara, twins Lebogang and Lebo Phalula, Mapaseka Makhanya, Cornelia Joubert, Caroline Wostmann and Rene Kalmer.

“Even though we will be competing, it is more about creating that much-needed awareness about breast cancer,” said Joubert.

“Knowing that we are running for a purpose will give us that extra boost of determination to succeed on the race day.”

Two Oceans and Comrades Marathon winner, Wostmann, said she was happy that a race such as this existed as it brought together an amazing array of quality athletes who come together to run for an illness that does not discriminate.

The first 15 000 entries will get a free T-shirt, and men are allowed to enter but must dress in drag. Entry forms can be found at selected SuperSpar stores and entries can also be done online.

Entries close on 26 September, but entries will be allowed on the day.
