JOBURG - With Joburg North residents constantly uploading statuses on the number of scams doing the rounds, Midrand Reporter asked residents which scams concern them the most.
ERIC MOTSEKI: As a resident of Ivory Park, I'm aware of the rental scams. A room is advertised at low rates and the person looking for accommodation pays for it, but they never get to move into the room. Mostly, it is people from outside Tembisa that fall for this one.
DOREEN MASUTHA: I fell for a scam. These people told me they were recruiters and I paid them R500 to place me with a company. They’ve changed their premises three times and they’ve stopped taking my calls. Fortunately, I am now a receptionist at a company in Midrand.
GIVEN MABUYELO: I have received more than 100 SMSes in my lifetime, serious. I know that OMO isn’t running a competition, These people think we’re gullible.
ALIC PILIME: The most annoying scam is the 419 scam. They somehow get hold of your number and send you SMSes claiming that you’ve won a competition. Yet you know that you haven’t entered any competition.
KGOMOTSO SEKANO: I hate the scam where people pose as recruitment agencies. They prey on your desperation as an unemployed person. There’s no such thing as an admin fee at legitimate agencies.
