This according to Bertus Visser, chief executive of distribution at PSG Insure, an independent financial services group that extends its services in the Sandton area.
Visser said on the scene of an accident, emotions often run high, and it was easy to be misled by a tow truck driver who seemed kind and wanted to help.
“However, choosing the wrong tow truck driver can lead to confusion and tedious administration when trying to retrieve your car,” added Visser.
He put together some tips to keep safe on the roads and assist motorists in making the right decisions if involved in an accident.
Visser advised motorists to have a sticker on their vehicle to make sure that authorities know to call your insurer to get the right tow truck to assist you.
“This will become particularly important if you are incapacitated in an accident,” he said.
Visser added that it was important to use a trustworthy tow truck company, such as those registered with the United Towing Association of South Africa or the South African Towing and Recovery Association.
“Keep in mind that using a tow truck driver that isn’t registered could be very costly, and could even put you at risk to become a victim of crime,” said Visser.
He advised motorists to keep a clear record of the details of the towing operator who assisted them. “The towing operator has to note all damage before towing the car away,” said Visser.
“You will be given documents to sign and you must insist on copies of these. Take caution to review and verify all terms and conditions before you sign.”
Visser said before a vehicle was towed, motorists must ensure they take their own photos of the accident, and remove any valuable personal belongings from their car.
“Keep in mind that the cost of towing your vehicle may not be covered by your insurer unless you utilise a reputable, approved tow truck company,” he added.
