GoForChess is an organisation specialising in chess education at schools, and after a number of poorly-run Johannesburg chess leagues collapsed, they began their league in February as a way to give school pupils the opportunity to compete in chess competitions.
After establishing the league and being welcomed with great excitement by various Johannesburg schools, the organisation ended the league on a high with a nail-biting final between Redhill School and Trinityhouse Schools A teams.
Spokesperson for GoForChess, Dominique Hurter said, “This year’s league ended with quite an exciting day. Redhill School triumphed and crowned themselves our league champions. The excitement built up as the end of the afternoon crept closer, and they got to take home an amazing prize awarded to them by GoForChess.”
The school received first prize in the form of a giant chess set which will be given to the school at the prize-giving ceremony on 4 November.
But as they finish the year’s matches, Hurter said the organisation hopes for more schools to compete next year. The individual chess championships will be hosted on 13, 20 and 27 October.
