Help Layla get to India

LONEHILL - Lonehill resident Layla O' Neill (6) was diagnosed two years ago with ependymoma (cancerous tumour) and needs to travel to India for medical treatment.

According to Sharyn, Layla’s mother, Layla has undergone extensive treatment over the past two years and needs more medical attention. MRI scans revealed that Layla has about 22 cancerous tumours.

Sharyn contacted Dr Papaiah Susheela Sridhar, a radiologist and oncologist specialist in cancer care in Bangalore, India. He ran tests on Layla in Zimbabwe as he was there doing pro bono work. He determined that her cancer was very rare and she needed chemotherapy, and advised that this be done in India.

Sharyn said they were unable to fly to India immediately because they were waiting for the Department of Home Affairs to issue an unabridged birth certificate for Layla.

“We have to wait for five to six week till we receive the certificate from the department,” Sharyn said.

In India, Layla will undergo a PET (positron emission tomography) scan, chemotherapy, radiation and CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery (a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of cancerous and non-cancerous tumours).

The CyberKnife treatment alone costs R150 000, but R400 000 is needed to be raised for all the medical costs involved. Through Layla’s Facebook page, Ependy Angels, R150 000 has been raised towards Layla’s trip to India.

“The medical treatment to India could help save Layla’s life,” said Sharyn. “We need to stay there for about three weeks.”
