Residents urged to comply with building regulations

MORNINGSIDE – Renovations taking place at a house in Morningside have caused a headache for one of the residents living in the area.

Norma Robinson initially thought the old house was being demolished, but she later found out that the house was actually being renovated. “I honestly believed that they were demolishing the house,” she said.

“It now appears that they are doing major renovations and there have been builders there at 6am, seven days a week, for the last couple of months.”

Ward 103 councillor Vincent Earp said the City of Johannesburg’s building control department needs to visit the site to ensure that the homeowner complies with regulations.

“More and more developers are flouting building regulations due to the lack of monitoring and enforcement of the regulations by officials,” added Earp.

Robinson said she had notified the City and an inspection was supposed to have been carried out, but no one got back to her.

No comment was received from the City by the time of publication.
