Freestyle to the top
FOURWAYS – Grace, flexibility and sheer determination is what brought 16-year-old Alexandra Mundell to the top of her game in freestyle dancing, and her results from recent competitions can certainly attest to this.

Mundell is a St Stithians College pupil and trains hard almost every day at Dance Zone International at the Bryan Park Shopping Centre. She has been dancing since the tender age of three.
The talented dancer participated in the South African Dance Teacher’s Association (Sadta) Classique Freestyle Championships held at Maragon School in Roodepoort on 18 July. She took firsts for the solo and slow events in her age category. Mundell and her dance partner also received first place in the couples event.
The competition was not the only feat Mundell successfully overcame and achieved this year, as she also competed against seven other nations at the World Freestyle Dance Championships held in Blackpool, England, in June. She was placed seventh in the final, securing her place as the South African slow dance champion in her respective age group.
Mundell’s mother, Jenny, is very proud of how far her daughter has come in her dancing career.
“For her to dance in the premier champion category is a great achievement,” said Jenny.
“She was dancing with the crème de la crème of dancing champions from around the world. For her to get a place in the top 10 is phenomenal.”
Coach, David Jones of Dance Zone International was just as pleased with Mundell’s performance. “It was absolutely amazing,” added Jones.
“She is a hard worker who constantly strives to improve her skills.”
When Mundell was asked what comes next in her dancing career she said, “I really hope I can compete in the world championships again next year and do even better. I want to continue dancing for as long as I can, after that, I want to teach dancing.”
