Initiated by matric pupil Nicoline Kriek, the Redhill School Matric Creative Committee took up the cause and has been working with the People’s Search and Rescue Unit. The initiative attempts to raise awareness within the local community regarding missing children all over South Africa.
The exhibition saw more than 500 artworks done by pupils in Grade 8 to matric, with each artwork selling for R30. All the proceeds went to the rescue unit in an effort to help underprivileged families look for their missing loved ones.
Kriek added that 1 697 children go missing every year with very few actually being found. She said, “The initiative acts as a way to change that stigma in society and to give the families hope.
“First, we have the exhibition and then we will plan on implementing the same project at different schools throughout next year.”
Head of design at Redhill School, Bronwyn de Matos Ala, and head of art, Marisa Maré, commended the work done by Kriek and the committee. Maré concluded, “I think it’s very important that our pupils are streetwise and socially aware and that they engage in social media while understanding the pitfalls. We think our pupils have done an amazing job here.”
