Educational psychologist at the school, Lauren Parker, said the initiative was based on an anti-bullying campaign originally started at Central Kings High School in Cambridge, Nova Scotia.
“It’s a pink campaign initiated by two pupils who intervened after witnessing another male pupil being bullied by his peers for wearing a pink shirt to basketball practise,” she said.
The campaign is to urge pupils to take a non-confrontational stand against bullying, and Redhill pupils took a pledge which will run from 19 June to 26 June. They made hand-painted pledges which were displayed in the school hall during the assembly.
Parker concluded, “By encouraging pupils to stand up for victims of bullying, we hope to create a respectful school environment whereby children become more aware of how they hurt one another’s feelings, and how they can make their peers at this school feel happier, included, empowered and safe.”
