Talking about social development

ILLOVO - Esteemed guests from across the South African business world were invited to the Gordon Institute of Business Science to attend the annual Social Investments Conference from 15 to 16 April.

The conference acted as a chance for government, corporates and non-governmental organisations to interact and develop leadership and accountability among the smaller communities in South Africa.

CEO of Tshikululu Social Investments Tracy Henry said, “Government, corporates and non-governmental organisations need to work together to ensure that leadership is nurtured at grassroots level, and continually developed and made relevant to different situations and contexts.”

The conference, which is going into its sixth year of operation, invited a number of speakers including Pink Drive founder Noeleen Kotchan and South African singer and academic Johnny Clegg, to approach an audience of corporates and non-profit organisations with ideas as to developing sustainable leadership in South Africa.

Senior programme manager of the network of social entrepreneurs at the Gordon institute of Business Science Kerryn Krige said the conference began from a series of conversations which dealt with the support of civil society organisations from a corporate social investment.

Krige added, “The conference is actually the culmination of years of conversation around what social development is and what can be done to improve social development in South Africa. And how to bring business, government and civil society together to do this.”
