Thieves steal 180k from Marlboro business

BRAMLEY - The Bramley police are looking for a Toyota Hilux following a robbery at a scrap metal business in Marlboro.

The incident took place earlier in March when suspects allegedly made off with a huge amount of money from Mangingi Scrap Metals.

According to Warrant Officer Moses Maphakela, spokesperson for the Bramley police, one of the suspects walked into the premises under the pretence of having scrap metal to sell.

“The suspect then proceeded to point a firearm at the manager, demanding he open the cash office and give him the money kept there,” he said.

The suspect then took R180 000 before leaving the premises and soon afterwards another employee informed the manager that a second suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at him.

Maphakela added that the same employee also identified the Hilux as the car used by the two suspects. Frank Engelbrecht, owner of Mangingi, confirmed the incident and expressed relief that no lives were lost during the robbery.

“I’m glad that my employees opted to give them the money because money we can afford to lose, but we can’t afford to lose a life to this incident,” he said.

Engelbrecht added that while he sympathised with the personal circumstances of those involved in criminal activities, he also knew how dangerous some criminals can get in such situations.

No arrests have been made at this stage and Maphakela asked residents to contact the Bramley police should they have more information on the Hilux.
