Canoeist does school proud

INANDA - St David's Marist College pupil, Kevin Asman, did the school proud with his impressive performance at the recent inter-school sprint races.

The canoe races took place in preparation for the South African inter-provincial Canoe Sprint Races taking place later on this year.

According to Jennie Dallas, public relations officer for GCU Public Relations, Asman managed to earn well-deserved points for his school, which has won the top canoeing school of Gauteng award for the past two years.

“Nearly 100 school-going children participated in the first school league race of this year, using the sprint lanes to practice for the inter-provincial sprint competition which will take place in April,” she said.

Dallas also explained how the races work, saying that points are allocated on a sliding scale from first to last finisher.

She added that these points accumulate throughout the year and are credited to the individual. The school is represented by the paddler and the club where the paddler trains.

The races, which took place at the Roodeplaat Dam, saw participation from schools in Gauteng and Mpumalanga, making it quite the attraction.
